Tiny – CakePHP Plugin
I’m pretty thrilled to introduce my first CakePHP plugin. Tiny is based off TinyUrl and is designed for a more custom presence with shortened url’s. For instance, go hit http://F-E-E-D-Z.com/9/lakers. You’ll notice how you’re redirected to the F-E-E-D-Z search page displaying Lakers results. You don’t have to customize the url like that – Tiny will automatically assign one for you if you’d prefer. But being able to customize the text is a very nice luxury.
I feel this can be a great tool to provide easy branding with advertising and social services such as Twitter. In fact, I got the idea from creating TinyUrl’s to post on Twitter – got tired of it. It dawned on me this morning it would be much better if I could brand my website with my own short URL’s. Plus, who knows what Google will see – perhaps that will also help having my domain in there. That link you see up there is a very attractive SEO link. I like it (can you tell I’m thrilled about this plugin).
I did research the CakePHP website to see if such a plugin existed – I, of course, did not find it. I will look for some CMS’s as well (Wordpress, Joomla). The programming would be just about the same. If those plugins don’t exist I may give that a run.
Anyway, please feel free to download the plugin, give it a run. I’ve tested on a local server as well as my live site and found no issues. I’ve written a pretty detailed README file that should explain everything.
BTW, if you caught on that I had the idea this morning then you’re mislead to think it took me all day to write. Just a couple of hours. Sweet.
